How I designed my logo. Vision and tips of Evivanca.

Hello, I'm a Belgian graphic & logo designer, Illustrator, Concept artist, Digital & Traditional Painter.
I sign my work with "Evivanca", the abbreviation of my name Evi Van Cauwenberghe.
This is the story of how I designed my logo in 3 chapters, showing different designs.

1. My vision on logo design as a graphic designer
During my bachelor of graphic design in a printing school (Higro Ghent) I learned about the history and use of font families, how to combine fonts and not combine them. There are a lot of designers now, that are technically very strong in making responsive websites, but lack that knowledge of  'typography, the art of graphic design".
As a logo designer my goal is to develop a strong logo with attention for concept, typography and beautiful design.

2. Different concepts
During my training as a concept artist, I learned how important it is to do research to find a good concept.
My research about my activities and interests lead to different designs. It was a challenge to create a logo that represents my different activities as a freelancer. In this case I was the designer and client at the same time!
I always present several concepts to my clients who ask me to design a logo. It gives them more possibilities.

1. First designs (1/4)
In this concept I used my initial E to combine with graphic elements like a pencil, a stylized bird. I tried thick and thin lines and different fonts. This concept didn't make it. The beak of the bird in combination with the thin lines, made me think too much of a needle and thread. The focus was also too much on pencil and drawing. I feel more like a painter instead of a draftsman.

2. Brush experiment (2/4)
In the next phase I started to experiment with my brushes and ink. One of my activities is painting and also calligraphy.

I experimented with these ink forms and ended up with a combination of a stylized flying bird and one of my initials (EVC). Repeating the C on top of eachother gave me an E, although some people may see a Euro symbol aswell.

3. A flying bird (3/4)
I started to stylize more and more and tried to make a combination of 3 lines, looking like brush strokes or a feather. This concept is about a bird that flies over a landscape. A landscape that can be a river or sea (blue line) or a hill or field of grass (green). I started to experiment with different kind of fonts to show my name aswell.
4. Less is more (4/4)
In the next concept I experimented with another form of a stylized bird. It looks like a magpie.
I played with its position on the V of Evivanca. Then finally I decided 'less is more' and deleted a lot of elements like too many text. The middle logo is the most stylized one.

I've showed my logo designs to different persons to get some feedback. (Thank you everyone who gave his opinion!)
One of the persons - working in concept art business -  saw a shark fin in my 'middle' design.
By his opinion I realized to transform and rotate the stylized element, to get more bird instead of shark.
Other people have another perspective than you, so it's worthwhile to get some reactions. Asking persons for feedback, can be really confusing too. You get a lot of different opinions, but you still have to make your own choice.

3. Final Concept
After transforming the shark into a bird, I chose for this logo and it's concept:
The 'E' in a  friendly script font stands for creativity. 'Vanca' in a robust serif typeface is the counterpart and represents professionalism and trust. The stylized element is a bird and a link to my illustrations with a heart
for nature.

Thank you for your attention!

Kind regards,
Evivanca
